Drawn from the remarkable collection of the Musée du Louvre, this exhibition examines aspects of Roman art through works from the first century B.C. through the early fourth century A.D. More than 180 objects, including mosaics, frescoes, terracotta statuettes, monumental sculptures, sarcophagi, reliefs, and glass and metal vessels were arranged thematically to highlight contrasts and underscore continuities in artistic manifestations of Roman public and private life.

Antioch Mosaics

Border detail of the Phoenix Mosaic, from the “House of the Phoenix,” Daphne, late 5th century AD. The design is made up of

a repeated motif of two confronted rams’ heads set on a pair of open wings with gray ribbons fluttering below. Scholars see in this mosaic a connection with Persian (Sassanian) art, as very similar motifs have been found on textiles, rock carvings, seals and metalwork of the Sassanian period.
