Expressionism

A small description

While sometimes difficult to define it can be seen as a marriage between abstract expressionism and figurative painting. Van Gogh is an example that comes to mind. The use of strong, bold color, less confined to reproduce a the way a figure looks like in real life. This kind of art expressed the artist’s feelings about the figure rather than just painting the figure as it actually appears.

Artist like de Kooning could be seen either as abstract expressionist or figurative expressionist because while the paintings are so abstract there are also parts of figures that can be seen in his paintings.

Vasily Kandinksy is a good example of this style of painting.
