Aerobiological monitoring of the “Sistine Chapel”: airborne bacteria and microfungi trends

sistine

The Sistine Chapel is undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous halls on account of the frescoes that accentuate it, expecially the art works of Michelangelo. Sistine Chapel actions 40.5 × 13.2 m at the basis and surges to a height of 20.7 m. The passing centuries have seen numerous restoration interventions, many of them deleterious, with consequent stratification of materials, some of an organic nature, that have often ruined the frescoes and rendered them unintelligible. For this reason a restoration intervention of the Vaults, the Lunettes and the Universal Judgment was commenced in 1980. The work was finally completed in 1994.
The Sistine Chapel is undoubtedly one of the world’s many well known hallways on account of the frescoes is what adorn it, expecially the timeless art works of Michelangelo. The Chapel actions 40.5 × 13.2 m at the base and rises to a height of 20.7 m. The work was finally completed in 1994.before and after the restoration work (Montacutelli et al., 1997). On completion of the restoration work the Chapel was equipped with an air conditioning system that makes it possible to maintain the relative humidity at values between 55 and 60 percent and to limit the fluctuations of air temperature to values ranging between 22 and 24◦. The equipment included an air change and filtration system that ensures daily air reneval inside the Chapel. With a view to checking the efficacy of this system, microbiological air sampling campaigns were undertaken in the Sistine Chapel in various seasons of the year. The general aim of the study was to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative variation of the microorganisms before, during and after the presence of visitors; a second aim was to evaluate the seasonal influence on these parameters.
